How to Make Your Home a Calming Spiritual Sanctuary
70
Exposure to the chaos in public places is stressful and tiring, and we all need a place to go to escape the mundane and find our piece of mind. A calm home is key to good physical and mental health for you and your family. With a little effort, you can make your home into a spiritual sanctuary that is a warm place to go after a long hard day. Pass along these tips to friends and coworkers, and encourage them to transform themselves into calmer and happier people.
Bringing nature indoors is one of the best ways to feel spiritual and closer to the earth. Elements of the earth, such as water, fire, earth and air, will make you feel more grounded and stable. Also consider using items, products and decorating schemes that have calming effects on your senses of sight, touch, scent and sound.
It is important to feel healthy, both physically and mentally, in order to be at peace and feel spiritual. Make your surroundings feel relaxing and uplifting, and set forth on a spiritual journey.
Earth Elements
- Earth: Grow houseplants in your home to provide oxygen and clean the air. Houseplants reduce contaminants and carbon dioxide in the air. They provide therapeutic healing for a number of ailments including respiratory illness, stress and mental illness.
- Water: Use a water fountain in your home. The sound of water has a calming effect, and adds beneficial humidity to the air. Water fountains are especially beneficial to humidify homes when air conditioners and heaters are running in hot and cold seasons.
- Fire: Burn candles in the home to create soft ambient lighting and a relaxing and romantic atmosphere. Hang candle holders on walls or place candelabras on surfaces to fill a room with natural light.
- Air: Use a salt crystal lamp to provide clean ionized air in the home. Salt is a natural purifier, and purification will contribute to good health and well being.
The Senses
Create a home that is pleasant to the senses of sound, smell, sight and touch.
Sound
Hearing is an important sense to nurture in the home. We all love lively and exuberant music once in awhile; however, to attain a spiritual state, calming music is a better choice. Music with sounds of nature will have a peaceful effect. Instrumentals with piano, harp or violin are calming to the soul. There are many new age music CD's available with sounds meant for use with meditation and yoga practice.
As an alternative to music, purchase a falling rain chime box. These boxes have tiny metal beads that fall from the inside top of the box, creating a pleasant sound. Another option is to place wind chimes in front of an open and breezy window.
Scent
Fill your home with aromas that transcend your soul. Choose scents that make you feel calm, spiritual or cozy. Burn incense with scents such as Frankincense, Sandalwood or Nag Champa. Burn candles with lavender, chamomile, jasmine or rose scents. Other options for creating scent include oil burners and potpourri simmer pots. Place a sachet filled with calming herbs under your pillow at night for a good nights sleep.
Sight
When decorating the home, choose a color palette that is calming to you. Hang art on the walls for inspiration, and place meaningful items in plain sight. Avoid clutter and too many knick knacks that are distracting to look at. As a rule of thumb, hide away anything that does not need to be visible.
Touch
Fill your home with linens such as pillows and blankets made with soft and warm textiles. Place soft and cozy furnishings on top of lush floor coverings.
Get Rid of Negative Behaviors and Items in the Home
A negative home is destructive to your health and well being. Below is a list of the behaviors and things you should get rid of in your home to bring positivity in.
- Get Rid of Drama - Put an end to arguing, fighting, hostility and dramatic behavior in your home. These behaviors are destructive to your mental and physical health and the health of your family.
- Reduce TV Time - It is amazing how much television contributes to stress in our lives, however many of us are not aware of it. Watching and listening to loud advertisements, depressing news, hyper kids programming and aggressive reality shows are not the way to feel calm and spiritual. Turn off the TV once in awhile and do something relaxing.
- Harmful chemicals - Most cleaning products sold for the home are full of harmful chemicals that will contribute to poor health and a poor state of mind. It is important to feel well in order to feel spiritually at peace. Make or purchase all natural cleaning products, as well as bath and body products for a healthier environment.
How to Perform a Spiritual Cleansing in Your Home
In addition to the steps above, you can perform a cleansing ritual in the home to rid the home of any leftover negativity. There are no particular religious connotations with this ritual, this is more spiritual than religious. I perform these cleansing rituals at least once per month, and I am amazed at how much it helps. The home feels brighter and happier once completed, and there is a feeling that the home is less "heavy".
- Burn Sage: Purchase a bundle of white sage herb. Sage bundles are available at many health stores and new age shops. Light the end of the sage bundle and place it in a clay bowl or shell. Allow the smoke to billow in the rooms of your home, and use any type of long feather to distribute the smoke into the corners.
- Cleanse with Salt Water: Use salt to cleanse the home for it's purifying qualities. Place a teaspoon of sea salt into a spray bottle filled with water. Spray the mixture on a clean cotton towel, and wipe down the walls around your home. The salt will not damage your walls, but will clean away not only dirt, but bad energy.
- Think positive thoughts while spiritually cleansing. I usually focus on cleansing the negativity and filling the home with positivity.
