Spooky and Scary Classical Music Songs for Halloween

Haunting Classic Music
Silly songs like "The Monster Mash" and "Purple People Eater" are fun songs to play for a whimsical adult's or children's Halloween party, but to scare up some spine-tingling fright at a Halloween party, play haunting classical music instead. Many classical songs have a creepy sound that is perfect to put you in the mood for the Halloween holiday.
Play the songs at your Halloween party, or play them while you decorate for Halloween. Nothing will inspire creativity in Halloween decorating more than these scary sounds playing in the background!
This music is the perfect complement to adult party themes such as vampire parties, witch gatherings, and monster bashes. Classical music is a fantastic choice to use for background music for events such as haunted hayrides and houses.
Filmmakers in the horror genre use classical songs to evoke a feeling of fright in their films. You may recognize some of these top scary classical songs from famous films such as "The Shining" and "Fantasia."
1. Dream of a Witches' Sabbath (From "Symphonie Fantastique") - Hector Berlioz
Remember the music playing in the beginning of the movie The Shining, when Jack Torrance and his family are driving through the mountains to the Overlook Hotel? This is the song that you hear playing. The orchestra has an eerily beautiful sound, that will send chills down your spine when you hear it, creating a haunting sense of anticipation. An absolute must song to play for a Halloween party!
2. Toccata and Fugue in D Minor - Johann Sebastian Bach
Striking and stunning sounds stream from the pipe organ in this piece, often thought of as Dracula's song. Intense and dramatic! Another spine-tingler perfect for the Halloween event.
This song sounds like something you would hear Lurch play in the Addams family home, so creepy . . . yet inviting!
3. Night on Bald Mountain - Modest Mussorgsky
Fans of the Walt Disney animated film Fantasia will recognize this composition. Part of the song is played in the final animation in the 1940 film. This dark piece was inspired by a story about witches holding sabbath on Bald Mountain. Awesome mood music for the Halloween holiday.
4. Carmina Burana - Carl Orff
The powerful and haunting chorus and intensity of the orchestral sounds in this piece will make your hair literally stand on end. Gives one a feeling of impending doom. By far, one of the top songs to play for a Halloween event.
5. Danse Macabre - Camille Saint-Saƫns
Skeletons frolicking and dancing around a cemetery on All Hallows eve. This is what you may picture when you hear this menacing melody.
Full of mischievous energy, a perfect background song for a Halloween or Day of the Dead celebration.

from Hamilton, a small (but proud) town in northwest Alabama that Norman Rockwell would have been happy to put on a magazine cover. Much Peace and Success to you!
Monster mash always get played at my place near Halloween. My favourite of those listed is Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor. I've heard many of these at live concerts of Chilliwack's symphony. I have been reading all these great Halloween hubs getting me ready for the season.
Great topic for a hub and great list! Abinoni's Adagio is on my list, too.
I like your idea of playing truly scary music for Halloween. But the kid's song "Monster Mash" that you mentioned is a song that can be danced to on "Just Dance: 2" for the Nintendo Wii. I danced to it this past weekend and thought about how cool it would be to have a Halloween Party and be able to dance to that song! Maybe I'm still a kid at heart! lol
