Spooky Fog Ideas for Halloween Decorating and Cemetery Scenes
71
There are several ways to create a haunting Halloween scene with spooky fog effects, including using dry ice and making a fog chiller. Fog will add a chilling ambiance to any Halloween decorating scheme. Add fog to a Halloween graveyard scene, add dry ice fog effects to a bubbling cauldron for a wicked witch scene, or add dry ice to the inside of a pumpkin and watch the fog pour out of the carved jack-o-lantern.
Reproduce the feeling of a creepy forest or cemetery filled with fog for an outdoor scene or party. You an even add additional effects using a machine for fog filled bubbles for party guests and trick-or-treaters to play with.
Dry Ice
Dry ice is one of the best methods for achieving fog effects for Halloween. When you place dry ice into water, the dry ice gives off steam and creates fog. You can place dry ice in a graveyard scene, or in a large pot or plastic cauldron decoration to create a witchy bubbling cauldron effect.
How to Use Dry Ice:
- Locate the container you want to use to fill with the dry ice. The container must hold water without leaking. You can use any container, however metal containers will retain the warmth of the water for a longer time and keep the fog rolling longer. Use large glass or metal containers, or a large plastic or cast iron cauldron.
- Cut apart your dry ice block. Be sure to wear a pair of heavy-duty work gloves, as dry ice is so cold it will burn your skin! Dry ice typically comes in large blocks packed in brown paper. Peel away the brown paper, and hammer a large flat-head screwdriver with a rubber mallet through the ice. Cut the ice into manageable chunks, small enough to fit submersed in the container you are using.
- Fill a container with warm water. Pick up chunks of ice with a pair of tongs, while wearing the gloves, and place the chunks of dry ice into the warm water. The fog effect will begin immediately.
- After a period of time the fog effect will begin to fade. Check to make sure the container of water is still warm, and if not, refill the container with warm water. Check every now and then and add more dry ice to the container.
Learn How to Make a Fog Chiller
Use a Fog Chiller
Fog machines are great for adding fog to the air, however by making a fog chiller, you can make fog that creeps across the ground of your graveyard. This is the type of special effect you see in movies where mist floats along the ground.
You can make a fog chiller by using inexpensive supplies that you can purchase at a home improvement store. An ice cooler or a trash can as the base, a fog machine and some PVC pipes are the main supplies needed to make a fog chiller. Watch this awesome video which shows the step-by-step process on creating a fog chiller.
How to Make a Fog Punch
Make a bubbling Halloween punch to place on your serving table for a party. Place your punch in a large bowl inside a larger glass bowl or cauldron. Then pour warm water and add a small chunk of dry ice to a separate jar, and place the jar next to the bowl inside the cauldron. Use a ladle to scoop the punch. Make sure that the jar you use has a small enough opening that someone cannot accidentally scoop the dry ice. You do not want to drink dry ice pieces, as they will burn the mouth and throat.
You can add the dry ice directly to the punch, if desired, for an adult only party. However make sure you skim the dry ice chunks to avoid getting them in the glasses, and make sure to warn your guests not to drink the dry ice.
Note: Make sure you use heavy duty work gloves or tongs for handling the dry ice to avoid skin burns.
Fog Bubble Machines
Fog bubble machines are a really fun invention, creating bubbles filled with fog, that when popped will release a puff of fog. The machines make very large bubbles that flow continuously so kids and adults can have fun running around and playing in the bubbles.
This would be a really cool and unexpected effect in an outdoor Halloween scene of any kind, that little trick-or-treating goblins passing by will love to watch!
